When I started working on this blog entry, I didn't know which writer to feature. But after reading just three deviations of this amazing writer my choice was done: it's been a while since I last browsed through literature on deviantART and doing so through Nicole's gallery was the most refreshing thing. Her style and metaphors are stunning and as intense as last summer's sun. Which I can assure you, has been for us the hottest in years.

"and if my words
could stitch your skin shut
then I would never shut up.
"

What do you do when the person you love the most, the one your life belongs to, doesn't keep her own safe? What happens when you love someone so much and they love themselves so little? I feel that this poem describes beautifully both the feeling of desperation itself (coming from both characters) and the resolve of the protagonist to not let her loved one surrender.

when your passion turns to grime
"listening to our own minds is dangerous. it's contagious. we do it out of desperation or boredom or maybe both."

So we try to keep our days busy, and our minds occupied with other things, but at the end of the day when there's nothing left and you're there alone with your thoughts... then, when facing your own soul, what comes out of it?

vows from a shower stall
"you are the patch of hair behind my kneecap
the razor always misses.
"

As the author says, "if shaving my legs was always this inspiring i would do it way more often."! :giggle:
From this rather silly, everyday thing proudeyesneverlie created an amazing poem which metaphors and stanzas will leave you smiling. And maybe thinking of someone...

wildflowers
"I wanna find a field of wildflowers
and roll around in them
so that my mind might look as pretty
as they smell.
"

Don't let the length of the piece scare you away. Every stanza, every image is as vivid as the first, every verse a story of its own. Let it carry you away and you won't regret it.

on The last headache by Sarrain
Looking at the piece without reading it, I can see that you have placed the entire poem within a single stanza. I do not know what to think of this yet, but I will keep this in mind as I read it. I also see you placed "last headache" at the beginning. Is this something arbitrary, or does it affect the poem? Well, my friends, we'll soon find out what this all means!
"Each jolt a blow to the raw cortex" I believe a period should be placed here.
"strings, endlessly" perhaps a semicolon here would be better. The two ideas within the next few lines are connected closely, but can be their own clause.

on Half of Something, Part of Nothing by The-Rynn
As far as visualization and imagery, there was a fair amount of "telling" rather than "showing" in this piece that distracted me from the story at hand. An example of this is, "I was an icon. I had gotten there by my violence, intimidating tactics and sheer over-powering force of will." Is there a way to show this in the story rather than flat-out telling the reader? Perhaps in conversation/dialogue? Or even in his interaction with the boy later? Think about it...

From the experience of a published author, a few tricks and tips that as simple as they sound, are most useful.

As the author writes, "Here on dA, there seems to be a lot of confusion and general mass hysteria when it comes to the subjects of writing style and voice.  What are they?  What's the difference?  Can you write one without the other?  How important are they, anyhow?  Do you really need either of them?  Wait, what are they again?" Writing Style vs. VoiceA Writer's Guide to Style vs. Voice
Here on dA, there seems to be a lot of confusion and general mass hysteria when it comes to the subjects of writing style and voice.  What are they?  What's the difference?  Can you write one without the other?  How important are they, anyhow?  Do you really need either of them?  Wait, what are they again?
Style is the form and structure with which you write.
Voice is the attitude and perspective with which you write.
In other words, voice is the emotion and feeling of a piece of literature, and style is the technical way of communicating that emotion.
Clearly, there is a tangible difference between the two.  Style is a delivery system for voice.  While voice can and should affect the form with which you write, you can most certainly write one without the other.  However, the best writing is a masterful fusion of both.
I'm here to illustrate for you the difference between style and voice and to define exactly what they are and how you can us
