Featured WRITERS

Ok, before we get into this, this is my first time writing one of these for a while. They usually save me for back-room stuff or writing special blogs because I've got a strange style that just won't stay tied down (I'm the admin equivalent of every character Zooey Deschanel has ever played).

So I get the Skype message: "You're up for WoR on the 6th, just a heads up."

And I spend the next few days wondering "Now who, exactly, should I be featuring? Which single person can I pick to show case for this fortnight?" And then I thought "Screw this I'm above the law, let's do something fun.

So here, have three pillars of dA's writing community and their writing, as well as minor biographies. As well as that, I'm going to link you to my two favourite book reviews, and then for the finale I'm going to compound some of the best writing advice I've come across as of late.

Maybe I'll even include a sexy post-script full of loads of useful links, because I'm a God amongst mankind like that.

If you don't listen carefully to every word this beautiful woman has ever said, regardless of how serious she said it at the time, then you're an imbecile in the cruellest sense of the word (See why they keep me locked away?). Neuro's been a strong member of our lit community for several years now, and her constant tirade of good writing advice, good writing and good sense of humour both in the general community and in our own literature sub-forum has brought a smile to my face for the vast majority of those several years.

We're blessed to have such a great CV, so why don't you go drop her a DD suggestion? From my experience she replies to every bloody one, successful or not, and she'll defend her decisions to the death if some childish prannock is trolling the piece when it gets featured. Good taste, good style, great sense of humour.

So go watch her.

Cretacious Yard
"A slitted yellow eye caught her like a rabbit in the headlights, if headlights have ever expressed a serious interest in ensuring the rabbit never sees its family again. Not because the rabbit has done anything to them personally, but because they wish to see all rabbits dead."

Velociraptors. 'nuff said. Go read it and enjoy yourself.

This woman is so full of good advice she deserves her own panel on prime-time television where she does nothing but talk sense into foolish young writers, as well as foolish young teenagers in general. And she's the nicest person I've ever met that I didn't hate.

I actually give her a lot of flack and wind her up as often as I can, but that's mostly because I don't like admitting to her face that she usually has the upper ground in arguments and discussions because Jesus Christ there is no stopping the constant tirade of information this woman knows.

And it's a shame. It's a shame because I feel she's under-appreciated on this website, and because I have no soul I'm telling you all to go and use this fantastic resource for young writers as much as you can because it will be worth it.

Oh, and go buy her book too.

Single Atlantean Female Seeks Soulmate
"No crazies, no weird fetishes, no YOLO-ers.
Just that one Atlantean who knows
"

I just noticed that this piece has requested critique and nobody's done it yet. Hint hint.

Seriously though, her grasp of situations that are normal and everyday makes them intricate and interesting. It's a skill few writers possess, and for that reason she's in the same league as David Levithan or Stephen King. You could learn a thing or two from her; I know I could.

Now this is one damn fine person right here. She runs ScreamPrompts, which is without a doubt the best place a writer on dA can go to get their ass kicked into gear. She's not going to pander to you, you're a grown ass writer, you should be writing.

Seriously though, either on the forums or in her group, this no-nonsense deviant will kick your ass into gear better than a drill sergeant ever could, despite using the same methods.

Oh and she's an awesome person too. Well deserves a watch.

Mature Content

Large Incident in a Small Town
" He was back in elementary school but as an adult, not really able to fit in the desks, the other students in single digits, all of them a lot smarter and quicker on the draw when the teacher asked a question. "

A fantastic display of dialogue and how to do it properly. Well worth a read to scratch up your conversation skills.

Featured CRITIQUES REVIEWS

Steven Poole

on House of Leaves by Mark Z Danielewski
"Danielewski thus weaves around his brutally efficient and genuinely chilling story a delightful and often very funny satire of academic criticism. In one way, and after the manner of Moby-Dick, the novel is its own Leviathan commentary (Danielewski even collects a Melvillean encyclopaedia of quotations about houses in one of the book's voluminous appendices). Every possible mythological and literary analysis of the story of Navidson's house is already provided in the text, but the house's impossibly vast, dark interior spaces, like the White Whale, finally shrug off all projected interpretation. Yet even that is not enough: Danielewski piles on even more narrative frames, ultimately to the novel's detriment."

NYRB

on On the Edge by Markus Werner
"A psychological drama with a masterful, pulse-quickening plot revolving around two seemingly very different men, who have more in common than they know."
