For me, it's empathy first, perseverance second and creativity third. A person that can't relate to another's feelings can't create characters that others would relate to, that's why I think empathy is the key ingredient of a good writer. Perseverance is needed when the writer polishes a work from ordinary to marvelous. And creativity is needed when you want to cook up something truly original.
